This pandemic has impacted all aspects of our lives including our sexual interactions. We have been in quarantine for four months or more (depending on where you live) which has put a damper on meeting new people and starting relationships that could include sex. Now, even as the quarantine is lifting, people may be wary about having sex for fear they may be exposing themselves or others to COVID-19. Personal safety and public health are very important and if you are a married couple or single – there are certain guidelines that will help you make safe decisions about engaging in sex. The experts at Medcare Urgent Care offers some guidelines on the subject.
Single and dating
- The internet is an essential vehicle for finding people you would like to date. There is no limit to the number of dating websites today! From the traditional ‘E-Harmony’ to sites aimed at any type of preference!
- Take more time to meet and get to know someone online before considering the option of meeting in person. The coronavirus has reintroduced ‘courtship’ or the art of taking a new relationship slowly.
- Avoid any ‘hookup’ websites. Do NOT meet someone for casual sex. It is impossible to know where they have been and if they are carrying the Coronavirus that can be transmitted. It’s just not worth the risk.
Committed relationship or married sex
- Couples that are in a committed relationship or married may believe they will be able to engage safely in sex. However, it is important to protect yourself if you are working outside of the home. Otherwise you could still bring the virus home without realizing it. So, wear a mask, social distance and wash your hands regularly if you must work in public. Then remove your clothing when you return home and take a shower before interacting with your partner.
- If you are in a high-risk category, then redouble your efforts to keep yourself and those around you safe. Public health officials recommend you self-quarantine. If your partner is also self-quarantining, then there should be no risk to engaging in sex. In fact, it would be a great outlet for finding comfort in these unprecedented times.
Pregnant or trying to get pregnant?
- Pregnancy is a wonderful experience. However, if you got pregnant prior to the outbreak of the pandemic then you must be very careful. It is possible to transmit COVID-19 in utero. There is still much research that needs to be done on the subject.
- If one partner has COVID-19 there is little evidence the virus can be transmitted via the eggs or sperm. Even so, it is worthwhile to get tested prior to actively attempting to get pregnant.
Showing symptoms?
- There are definite symptoms of Covid-19 that should immediately trigger the decision to quarantine in a room away from the rest of the household. A fever or cough are both indicators of the virus. Treat the symptoms and get medical advice.
Remember, COVID-19 is still a new disease and there is much that medical experts and doctors are learning about the virus. It is advisable to keep yourself informed by referring to various sites including the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization and resources through your state’s health website.
